Art Deco Bronze Medal, Chamber of Commerce of Roubaix, Hippolyte Lefebvre

  

Superb Rectangular Bronze Medal - History of Roubaix. I am offering this magnificent collector’s medal in bronze with a brown patina, created by the famous French sculptor and medallist Hippolyte LEFEBVRE (Grand Prix de Rome 1892).

This finely executed piece celebrates the industrial power and centuries-old history of the city of Roubaix.

Obverse (Front): Allegory of the City or of Commerce, holding Mercury’s caduceus, seated on an eagle in full flight. In the background, a shield bearing the words “Peignage, Filature, Tissage,” symbols of Roubaix’s textile industry.

Inscription: “CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE ROUBAIX” and the motto at the bottom: “PROBITAS - INDUSTRIA.”

Reverse (Back): Detailed historical scene showing Pierre de Roubaix presenting the charter to the inhabitants in 1469. Inscription: “Pierre de Roubaix giving the inhabitants of his city the charter authorizing them to make cloth from all wools.”

Artist: Hippolyte Lefebvre (signed on both sides).
Material: Bronze (beautiful original patina).

Condition: Very good condition, well-defined reliefs, slight edge wear from handling.
