Louis Botinelly, born in Digne on January 2, 1883, is the son of a marble worker and stone cutter, originally from the canton of Ticino (Switzerland) and settled in this city at the time of Louis's birth. The family later moved to Marseille, on Rue Saint-Pierre, in a workshop inherited by Botinelly's father upon the death of his brother. Thanks to a scholarship from the city of Marseille, Louis Botinelly was able to stay in Italy in 1902, where he worked in the workshop of Jules Coutan. In 1905 he was first in the national school of fine arts in Paris. He settled in the capital in 1906, where he created a large number of his works. In 1911, he received a bronze medal for his Bear Trainer. The Bear Trainer, a bronze group (1911). The group used to be located in Place du Général de Gaulle. It is now situated on the Esplanade de la Tourette, opposite the Église Saint-Laurent in Marseille.
