GEORGES LAVROFF (1895–1991) was a leading figure in Russian animal sculpture during the Art Deco movement. Originally from Siberia, his stay in Paris in the 1930s marked a turning point in his career.

His animal sculptures, with their Cubist facets, dynamic forms, and graceful lines, were successfully exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. Upon returning to Russia, he was imprisoned by the Stalinist regime and sentenced to five years in a labour camp before being rehabilitated and recognised in his homeland. A solo exhibition of his work was held in Moscow in 1982, where he died in 1991.
