Sculptural bronze bookend with a patinated finish, depicting a Carthaginian war elephant inspired by Hannibal’s campaigns during the Second Punic War. The animal, richly harnessed and armored, features a defensive spike on its chest. On its back, a combat howdah carries two warriors in ancient armor and helmets, one of whom holds a signal horn. Two shield-bearing infantrymen complete the scene at the base of the group. The whole piece is mounted on a black marble base with white veining, rounded front corners, and a stepped geometric vertical bookend back, enhanced by two applied copper plaques, characteristic of the Art Deco vocabulary. Bronze with a very beautiful nuanced brown patina and subtle golden highlights, emphasizing the fine chiseling.

Condition: impeccable, both for the bronze and the marble. A decorative and collectible object with a strong presence.
