Adolphe Bloch/Jean Gauthier: large Art Deco chandelier in silvered bronze and frosted white molded-pressed glass. The chandelier offered for sale here is a production by Adolphe Bloch, and its trace can be found in a catalog from the early 1930s under reference no. The manufacturer’s monogram, namely A., is present inside the central framework as well as on each wall-mounted branch.

The silvered bronze frame consists of a square central section with fan-shaped corner panels decorated with radiant floral motifs, from which four descending wall-mounted branches extend. Four square-section suspension rods connect to the richly decorated square canopy.

The glassware, produced by Établissements Jean Gauthier at the Cristallerie d’Ézanville, consists at the center of a square chandelier base with geometric floral motifs. Four molded-pressed glass cornices with the same theme, as well as smaller panels of frosted white glass, are placed in the openings of each wall-mounted branch (see image no. Four molded-pressed glass tulips with the same geometric floral theme. Each tulip bears the maker’s mark J. Robert, one of the brands used by Jean Gauthier, whose historic Paris headquarters were located at 12–14 rue Jean-Robert.

In total, the eight light points, four in the center and four more in the wall-mounted branches, use B22 bayonet-base sockets. Due to the size of the chandelier offered for sale, it will be shipped partially disassembled.

Bloch was a bronze fitter who began his career at Maison Peyret at 44 rue de la Folie Méricourt. He founded his Paris business in 1905, located at 19 rue Pasteur (workshops and shop), in addition to an exhibition store at 37 boulevard Voltaire. In 1926, he took over the former Maison G. Peyret, manufacturer of lighting fixtures, where he had started out. He moved his offices, shop, and workshops to 7 and 9 Cité Popincourt (14 rue de la Folie Méricourt) until his death in 1946. Adolphe Bloch was undoubtedly among the most important lighting bronziers between the two world wars.

Établissements Jean Gauthier produced a significant amount of lighting glassware in their Ézanville factories. Jean-Baptiste Gauthier (Toulon-sur-Allier, 1867 – Ézanville, 1932) began at the end of the 19th century as an accountant at Duchange & Meidinger, glass manufacturers and dealers.

In 1906, Gauthier was established in Ézanville and was still working for Duchange. In 1911, Jean Gauthier, together with his nephew Ernest Gauthier, bought the former Charles Supplisson and Schmider Frères business, a representative firm for ceramics and crystalware located at 13 rue Paradis. It was his nephew Ernest who became the technical manager of production.

In 1914, the Gauthiers set up a decoration workshop for glass and porcelain at 12 rue Jean-Robert, which was later expanded after the First World War to also occupy 14 rue Jean-Robert. Since 1906, and until his death, Jean Gauthier lived in Ézanville, where he established a new manufacturing plant in 1926, after dissolving the former company and abandoning his shop at 13 rue Paradis, his first address. A new company was created with his nephew, and in 1931 it became Établissements Jean Gauthier, with his nephew Ernest Gauthier (Toulon-sur-Allier, 1889 – Paris, 1957) and his stepson Fernand-Henri Caillot (Maisons-Alfort, 1893 – Montmorency, 1973) as partners; both were technical directors of production and co-managers.

From 1926 onward, the Cristallerie d’Ézanville, located at 5, 18, and 20 rue de l’Église in Ézanville (Seine-et-Oise), produced molded-pressed glass that was in high demand, especially among lighting manufacturers; its quality was among the best on the market. The company mainly used two trademarks: J. Gauthier, always molded into the glass. During the 1930s, a new trademark appeared: “Ezan” (for Ézanville).

This mark was used until the end of the company.

After Jean Gauthier’s death in December 1932, the company continued to be run by his nephew and his stepson, then in the 1950s solely by Fernand Caillot until its early dissolution and liquidation on June 1, 1960.
